It wasn’t long ago that diesel powered vehicles were gaining in popularity because the fuel was cheaper than gas. But the prices for all types of fuel are rising so many people are concerned. Today, diesel energy prices are more expensive than regular gasoline. Many environmentalists, researchers, and technologists are trying to find new alternatives to traditional fossil fuels.
The original diesel engine was designed to run on peanut oil or vegetable oil but because petroleum was much cheaper, people chose diesel fuel. It seemed that people didn’t fully understand that these engines would use regular cooking oil. Modern day biodiesel is generally produced from vegetable oil, animal fats, soybean oil, and even recycled restaurant grease. Today there is a fuel mixture called B20 which is composed of 20% biodiesel fuel and 80% petroleum. The advantage with biodiesel happens to be the oils are biodegradable, and has low particulate emissions.
One more option is a fuel that is a byproduct of petroleum refining called liquefied petroleum gas or LPG, which is often used in place of diesel fuel. LPG currently is the least expensive of all petroleum products. LPG might be easily used by applying a conversion kit that turns the propane in LPG into fuel for your diesel vehicle. A completely biodegradable and renewable fuel, that is made from a biomass that has been fermented, is ethanol. It doesn’t contribute to the greenhouse gas emissions, mainly because it is a clean fuel. It happens to be made from 15% gasoline and 85% alcohol, which is exactly how it got the name E85, and it can be used on any diesel engine vehicle. It can have a higher price tag than another alternative type of fuel.
One more solution is electric cars but there are a number of issues. The battery doesn’t last very long and cannot go fast enough for the freeway. Even so, you will find there’s sports car, named the Tesla that is very fast and can go far on 100% pure electricity. A hybrid automobile is often a better option than going all electric at this time. They’re a pairing, having both a gasoline engine and an electric motor. While they may be pricier than a standard car, they offer the best fuel mileage.
All of the alternative fuels for cars or trucks seem to have their particular problems. But work is ongoing to improve and to make them more viable for the consumer market. Someday later on there’ll be alternative fuels running any vehicle.
